Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), the leading global provider of converged IP and wireless network test solutions, is expanding its WAN optimization offering by introducing the 40GE ImpairNet™ load module. Ixia's 40GE ImpairNet is the industry's first 40GE test solution for emulating real-world network impairments. Testing a variety of wide area network (WAN) applications, the new 40GE ImpairNet module emulates the latency inherent between data center clouds and validates whether the end-to-end performance is impacted by the delay within the WAN cloud. Ixia will demonstrate the 40GE ImpairNet module at this year's OFC conference in Los Angeles from March 6 - 8.
The growing demands placed on data centers by media-rich and bandwidth hungry applications requires the use of Higher Speed Ethernet (HSE) connections between data center clouds. The ability to completely characterize the latency performance of data center clouds over HSE links is critical for time-sensitive applications -- such as financial transactions -- where even milliseconds of delay can result in a loss of millions of dollars.
Understanding how network design can affect the timeliness of data is crucial to network operators. The OFC demonstration will highlight how running traffic over a WAN can introduce latency and prevent timely delivery. At the show, the 40GE ImpairNet module will emulate a WAN between Ixia's traffic generation and the Dell Z9000, and compare the delivery time to traffic ports connected within the data center.
The 40GE ImpairNet module supports unprecedented levels of latency and network distance emulation. It is integrated with IxNetwork traffic generation and analysis, which provides flexibility in impairment configuration. Users create and impair traffic flows with reusable classifier and impairment profiles. It is also integrated with Ixia's StatViewer, which provides many useful features to view and analyze impairment statistics. ImpairNet load modules can emulate a host of traffic issues, ranging from dropped packets to jitter and delay -- at full 40GE line rates.
Ixia has accelerated the development and implementation of HSE starting with its participation in the IEEE 802.3's High Speed Study Group (HSSG) in September 2006. It participated in a first-ever demonstration of HSE testing at NXTComm in June 2008, and hosted the world's first public HSE interoperability plugfest at iSimCity in September 2010. Ixia has been crucial in developing and delivering multi-vendor HSE benchmarking tests throughout the industry. Through the evolution of HSE, Ixia has demonstrated the viability of its network implementation with dozens of equipment vendors and service providers worldwide.
The ImpairNet test module includes 2 x 40GE ports on a single XM module to achieve the industry's first full line rate impairment on all frame sizes, ultra-high latency emulation (500ms at 40G) and integrated software and hardware traffic and impairment generation.
ImpairNet load modules have a single-slot form factor and are inserted into a high-density XM2 or XM12 chassis to provide 2 or 12 modules per chassis configuration. The load modules offer 2x40GE interfaces and emulate up to 24 unidirectional or 12 bi-directional network clouds per chassis.
The new 40G module complements the existing 1GE and 10G ImpairNet Test Modules that also offer the highest latency emulation in industry across all packet sizes at up to line rate (6 sec for 1GE and 600ms for 10GE).
"The evolution of data centers to cloud computing, and the increased traffic demands, requires faster 40GE links in order to meet user needs. Comprehensive testing to ensure the performance of mission-critical applications over these links is crucial," said Tara Van Unen, senior manager, market development at Ixia. "Ixia provides the only testing solution that combines traffic generation, network emulation, and WAN impairment over 40GE HSE in a single, cost-effective platform."
"Network administrators need to fully understand the performance of their network in order to provide their users with the highest quality and most reliable services. Part of this is recognizing how WAN latency affects service delivery," said Arpit Joshipura, head of Dell Networking product marketing and management. "Ixia's impairment solution helps us more fully characterize our network deployments so that we can confidently assist our customers in achieving true end-to-end performance visibility."
"The use of higher speed Ethernet for interconnecting data centers is on the rise and will be one of the principal interconnects as both users and traffic requirements increase. Operators will require thorough and accurate latency and jitter testing on these WAN interconnects to fully understand the impact to network performance," said Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "Ixia's impairment testing technology can be used to emulate WAN cloud characteristics on 40GE traffic streams coming out of a data center switch, in order to simulate various cloud conditions -- and this is essential for operators to maintain a solid network."
